Wels Catfish
Silurus glanis
Overview
The wels catfish is Europe’s largest freshwater fish and a thrilling catch for experienced anglers. Georgia’s warm rivers and reservoirs provide good habitat, especially in the lower Mtkvari and Zhinvali.
Where to Find Them
Catfish prefer deep holes, undercut banks, and areas near dams. Zhinvali Reservoir and the Mtkvari River near Mtskheta are the most accessible locations near Tbilisi.
Best Techniques
- Bottom fishing with heavy tackle and large baits (dead fish, liver)
- Night sessions are most productive in summer
- Use strong hooks (6/0–8/0) and 30+ lb line — these fish grow large
Seasonal Notes
Catfish are most active when water temperatures exceed 20°C. Summer nights after warm days produce the best results. They become sluggish in cold water.
