Common Carp

Cyprinus carpio

Cyprinidae

Overview

Common carp are the most widespread and accessible fish in Georgian waters. They thrive in warm lakes and slow-moving rivers, making them the primary target for many local anglers.

Where to Find Them

Carp are abundant in Lake Bazaleti, Zhinvali Reservoir, and the slower stretches of the Mtkvari River. Look for them in bays, near weed beds, and at the mouths of inflows.

Best Techniques

  • Feeder fishing with groundbait and corn is the most reliable method
  • Bottom rigs with hair-rigged boilies for larger specimens
  • Float fishing with bread or worm in the margins

Seasonal Notes

Carp are most active in warm water (18–25°C). Post-rain conditions often trigger feeding frenzies. Night fishing can be excellent in summer.
