Brown Trout

Salmo trutta

Salmonidae

Overview

Brown trout (Salmo trutta) are the premier game fish of Georgia’s mountain rivers and cold lakes. They are prized for their fighting ability and willingness to take both natural baits and artificial lures.

Where to Find Them

Look for brown trout in cooler, oxygen-rich water — mountain streams, lake inflows, and deeper pools in rivers. Lake Bazaleti and the upper Aragvi tributaries are reliable locations.

Best Techniques

  • Spinning with small silver spinners (3–7g) in spring
  • Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies in clear mountain streams
  • Float fishing with worms near lake inflows in autumn

Seasonal Notes

Trout are most active in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) when water temperatures are ideal. Summer heat pushes them into deeper, cooler water — focus on early morning sessions.
